Final Mandalas-
5/5/15 - Today, art students were given the art final schedule which starts this coming Thursday, May 7th, 2015. Students and parents, please sign and turn it in by Thursday, to let the teacher know that you each are aware that art classes are having an eight day final. Due to the nature of art, projects rather than tests, our finals start earlier. If a student needs to be absent during this time, they can make up the work after school, any M-F afternoon, Monday the 18th is the last day for final make up. The art quarter grades will due by the Monday, May 18th, 2015 also.
For reference the art final schedule is: 5/7, 5/8, 5/11, 5/12, 5/13, 5/15, 5/18 and the scheduled Final time per class. Seniors who have an A for both Quarter 3 and Quarter 4, do not need to come to art class the Final test day period, but they do need to be working on an art project during the other scheduled art final days.

4/29/15 Before embarking on making their own kites, students reviewed kite making techniques and got a brief glimpse of the physics of kite flying. First they drew kite stability points and the effects of wind from The Physics of Kite Flying site- http://www.real-world-physics-problems.com/physics-of-kite-flying.html, then students watched the MIT video, "Soaring in the Wind" http://video.mit.edu/watch/soaring-in-the-wind-the-science-of-kite-flying-26970/. Afterwards, classes discussed possible lighter materials that could be used in making their individual kite.
Last day of group kites - finishing them, then trying to fly them.
Friday, 4/24 through Tuesday, 4/28, students are working in small groups to make a variety of kites-prototypes. So far the sled kite(green paper kite) flew better than the store bought kites.
Week of April 20th, 2015 - Art classes have been researching countries that fly kites and why. http://www.drachen.org/ has been a very helpful site. We also have been viewing how to make kites - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ln9YvlhikAg or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9qZHrDDBCUg. Whenever there seemed to be wind, the classes have been trying their hand at flying Mrs. Dikinis' kites - pictures below.
Starting April 20th, 2015 the art classes will be investigating the history of kite flying throughout the world. Did you know that April is National Kite Month?

The last week of March, art classes examined their definitions of art and craft. Students then researched the history of art and craft definitions. Classes wrapped up the week by doing a four corners activity. "Craft is not art", was the statement and students decided which position they wanted to take, 100% or over 50% for the statement, or 100% or 50% disagreeing the statement. Students were to use their research to back up their positions.
March 2015 - Art classes will be creating a multi media collage on canvas board. The collage needs to have a theme with two images and some small 3D objects along with art techniques. Students were encouraged to think about what is important to themselves and then to create a collage around that idea. Homework due, Friday 3/6/15 - Three theme ideas with how the student will visually carry them out and what objects for each idea. Two printed images and a small bag of objects to help represent one of their theme ideas from home are also due. Please do not buy objects, students were encouraged to look in the "junk drawer" etc. and then ask parents if they can use whichever objects for their collage. We watched Leanne Bishop's "Sweet November mixed media on canvas" video for students to see some of the techniques we will be doing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ub1uIWmccQU
Art classes finished the value drawing unit by student pairs creating a Kahoot quiz about the artist Cezanne and value questions. The classes then played some
of their fellow students' quizzes.
of their fellow students' quizzes.
End of February 2015 - Students furthered their chalk pastel drawing skills and observing values by drawing flowers from pictures.
February 2015 - Art classes continued exploring how to depict light by drawing three different apples with chalk pastels. Students were learning how to observe a 3D object as their subject and working with color.
After the charcoal drawings, students had a week to do an Independent project. They chose what subject matter to depict and what medium to use.
January 2015 - The art classes set the mood for working with charcoal by reading and seeing a video of Edgar Allan Poe's "The Tell Tale Heart". Poe was a Romantic Era - Gothic writer, so students became familiar with the characteristics of the Romanticists. Students watched the movie, "Corpse Bride" by Tim Burton to see how the objects are portrayed. They had a scavenger hunt to explore contemporary artist Joseph Norman and last century artist, Charles Burchfield. Students first started working with charcoal by doing a six value chart then using five values to create a sphere. For their main project, students were able to choose their subject matter as long as it was printed out and had a change of values.
