Community Relations > The Courthouse Gallery
As part of their education, it is important for young people to understand the role of the judicial branch of government as well as the other branches. A key ingredient to a strong democracy is a better-informed citizen of all ages, but children are the key. Within them are the seeds of our society and they have much to say. Art is only one form of the way in which they communicate. This can be a very powerful form of communication.
In an effort to facilitate communication using art, an entire wall on the first floor of the superior courts building, an area dedicated for use by the Clerk of the Superior Court, has been set aside as The Courthouse Gallery. Just about everyone entering the court's building whether it is for jury duty or other business has an opportunity to observe the artwork of talented young people attending high school in the greater Tucson area.
The Courthouse Gallery was dedicated in December 1997. The first school to display the artistic talents of students was Flowing Wells High School. Since then, numerous high schools within the Tucson Unified School District and other districts have had their students participate by displaying artwork.
Artwork from local schools is on display for about two months at the gallery and the students are honored with a certificate of recognition and a reception. They are also provided an opportunity to observe judicial proceedings and to ask questions about what they have observed.
